Cambodia
Located in the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, Cambodia was the cradle of the
Khmer civilization, which elaborated in original forms the cultural values of the most
ancient Hindu kingdoms that arose in the plains of the peninsula. The sense of greatness
and power expressed by the Khmer rulers finds its main expression in that very particu-
lar tangle of nature and artifacts of the past that emerges near Angkor, one of the
ancient capitals of the empire, an eloquent symbol of the deep cultural, political and
religious to which these territories were subject. Known in the past as Beauful Land or
the land of smiles. Despite the repercussions followed by colonial domination, the closu-
re of the borders following the end of the Viet Nam war, the devastating internal confli-
cts that have shaken the civil fabric of the country, Cambodia has repeatedly tried to
regain a balance that still appears far away . In this complex framework, the country
seems to maintain what has always been its distinctive features, scratched only superfi-
cially by the French domination. Essentially agricultural, linked to the rice fields and the
seasonal rhythm of the great river that crosses it and gives it life, the Mekong, Cambo-
dia therefore faces a difficult process of recovery both from an economic point of view
and from the point of view of internal political stability. aggravated, on the one hand, by
structural shortcomings and the very low power of attraction of foreign investments
and, on the other, by a tiring return to democracy.
