The Klong Kone mangrove forest was once destroyed, damaging the abundant area of mangroves, the
coastal ecosystem and marine animals. Since
fishing could no longer serve the local community,
the young man turned to other occupations.
In 1991, villagers began reforesting the area to
restore livelihoods and prosperity; however, many
problems occurred during the first three years.
There was little knowledge of tree selection, tree
planting skills and a lack of cooperative spirit on the part of some villages.
However, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn viewed mangrove reforestation
as a serious problem and went to Klong Klone five times between 1997 and 2004
to plant mangroves.
Currently, the Klong Klone mangrove area is
revitalized. There are people living along the coast
in numbers, local fishing can serve the villagers sufficiently, migrants have
returned to earn a living in their town, and families stay together. There are
many self-sufficient occupations for villagers. Some come together to
provide skill-based professional lessons such as fishing, catering, Kra-Tang
or sea farm huts, boat trip services, cork tree plantations, and Don Hoi Lod
sightseeing. Others have an ecotourism service for day tourists and for
overnight stays in Kra-tang.
Today Klog Klone Mangrove Forest is a major eco-tourism point in Samut Songkram that combines
mangrove conservation, sustainable livelihoods and a renewed sense of community. The
