Shah Alam is the capital f the state f Selangr and lcated within the Petaling district and in a small part f the
neighbring Klang district. Shah Alam replaced Kuala Lumpur as the capital f
the state f Selangr in 1978 due t the incrpratin f Kuala Lumpur int a federal
territry in 1974. Shah Alam was the first planned city in Malaysia after
independence frm Britain in 1957. Malaysia grew rapidly after its
independence in 1957 under its secnd Prime Minister f Malaysia,
Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak Hussein . Shah Alam was nce knwn as Sungai
Renggam and was knwn fr its il palm and rubber prperties. Later, the same
area was identified as Batu Tiga befre Malaysia's independence, and has
been the center f trade fr centuries. f rubber and palm il. The Sungai Renggam plantatin was destined fr the
develpment f a twnship by the gvernment f Selangr in 1963, and under the recmmendatins f Vlad Antlic, a
United Natins twn planning cnsultant, chse the current site strategically lcated
between Kuala Lumpur and Prt Klang. Its current name was chsen by the then
Sultan f Selangr, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, by his late father Sultan Alam
Shah. Many ther mnuments, buildings and even a street are named after the late
Sultan. Shah Alam was pened in 1963 with the aim f transfrming it int the new
administrative center f Selangr, replacing Kuala Lumpur, which became federal
territry n February 1, 1974. With the cnsent f the Sultan, Shah Alam was prclaimed
the capital f Selangr n December 7, 1978 with an area f 41.68 km2 and
administered by a city cuncil. Shah Alam had encuntered several prcesses t extend
his areas and the latest was n January 1, 1997. Thrugh the 1190 Gazette Plan,
Shah Alam was extended t 293 km2.Shah Alam btained city status n ctber 10, 2000
with Dat "Haji Abu Sujak Haji Mahmud as first mayr. He recently served as deputy Menteri Besar, r Prime
Minister f Selangr. Abu Sujak declared the visin t make Shah Alam a mdern city with a unique "identity f
Bandaraya Melayu (" Malay city "), where the achievements f the Malay race in all areas are illustrated. In
keeping with this identity, Shah Alam was declared the first city in the wrld withut entertainment spts t avid
any vice activity.
