structures both Historically and architecturally, Ayutthaya was placed on
the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The city was founded by
Ramathibodi I around 1350 on an island formed by the confluence of the
Chao Phraya, Lop Buri and Pa Sak rivers. The modern state of Thailand
can be said to date back to its founding, as the kings of Ayutthaya
extended their influence until their state became one of the most powerful
in Southeast Asia. Its territory spanned all of present-day Thailand. , with the exception of the Far East and
the Far North, and along the Bilauktaung and Dawna ranges within the territory that now constitutes
southeastern Myanmar (Burma). The city, often called Krung Kao ("ancient capital"), prospered for more
than 400 years and at its height may have supported hundreds of thousands of residents. Most of Ayutthaya's
architecture, art and literature was destroyed. in the sack of the city by the armies of the Burmese king
Hsinbyushin in 1767, marking the end of the reign.

Wat PhananchoengWat Phanan Choeng is a Buddhist temple, on the east bank of the Chao Phraya
River, in the southeastern part of the confluence of the Chao Phraya and
Pa Sak rivers.Today, as part of Ayutthaya Historical Park, the temple is a
popular tourist attraction. Built in 1324, some 26 years before the city of
Ayutthaya was officially founded, the temple must have been partly
connected to the first settlements in the area. These allegedly included a
community of 200 refugees from the Song dynasty of China. The great wihan,
the tallest building within the temple complex, houses an immense golden
Buddha, 19 meters high, dating back to 1334 AD. This highly revered Buddha statue is called Luang Pho
Tho and Sam Pao Kong. The statue is considered a guardian for sailors. Presumably, before the
destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767 CE.
Wat Yai Chai Mongkol: One of the most important temples in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon has
a long and illustrious history. And unlike many of Ayutthaya's other ancient
sites, this is still an active temple where monks reside. Thais visit Wat Yai
Chai Mongkhon not only to pay their respects to the Buddha, but also to
pay their respects to one of the most respected kings in Thai history, King
Naresuan the Great.
