Day 8 - (Chiang – Mai - Nakhon Sawan).
After breakfast departure for Nakhon Sawan
Nakhon Sawan was founded during the reign of Dvaravati (from the 6th to the 11th century AD). Originally
made up of ethnic Mon populations, the Kingdom of Dvaravati
included the territories of present-day central Thailand (the fertile
floodplain of Chao Phraya) and Western Thailand. The Dvaravati
Kingdom played a central role in the Indianization of the region, in
particular as regards the spread of Buddhism. Subsequently, the
town was annexed to the Kingdom of Sukhothai (1238-1378) and
named Mueang Phra Bang. With the rise of the Kingdom of
Ayutthaya (1350-1767), Mueng Phra Bang became an important
trading center (in particular for the export of rice and teak), thanks
above all to its strategic position. In 1895, the ruler Rama V proclaimed Nakhon Sawan the capital of the
administrative region called Monthon Nakhon Sawan (current province of Nakhon Sawan)
Temples and attractions
Wat Kiriwong: The Temple is located at the top of Daowadung, in a panoramic position over the town of
Nakhon Sawan. The temple is characterized by the splendid
Prachulamanee Pagoda, an imposing golden chedi finely decorated
with numerous images of the Buddha. The base of the
Prachulamanee Pagoda consists of a four-level structure, as
specified below: on the first level there are numerous statues of the
Buddha; the second is dedicated to monks who are particularly
venerated and respected by the local community; the third level
offers some copies of the most revered sacred images of the
kingdom (including the Emerald Buddha); the fourth and last level is characterized by murals depicting
some scenes from the life of the Buddha. Outside there is a statue of Phra Maha Boonrod, the monk who
"commissioned" the construction of the pagoda. From the upper terrace you can enjoy a splendid panoramic
view of the town of Nakhon Sawan and the surrounding area (photo below).
